Fly Fishing Lago Strobel / Jurassic Lake
The lake itself is a large desert sink lake measuring approximately 20 by 15 km. It is located at approximately 3,000 ft. elevation in the wide open desolate expanse of the Patagonian Steppe. Here the rainbow trout average over 10 pounds with countless fish in the mid-teens as well as good numbers of fish into the 20 pound class. These fish are extremely stout and most are incredibly strong and acrobatic.
All of the fishing is done while wading or standing on the bank. Typically, a single guide will spend the day with a group of two or three anglers, depending on which beat is being fished. During a week’s visit, anglers will have the opportunity to fish different section of the Barrancoso River and any number of bays on Strobel Lake, including the inlet where the Barrancoso enters the lake. During the high water season, visiting anglers also gain access to beautiful Moro Creek and its surrounding lagoons. This small creek fishes great with dry flies.
The Jurassic season runs from September to May, during the season, anglers can expect to fish two different migrations, one in the early season from September to mid January and the second one from mid March to the end of the season
Lodging:
Completely remodeled and expanded in 2016, Jurassic Lake Lodge can host up to ten visiting anglers. Single and double occupancy rooms are available and each includes a private bathroom and hot shower. Despite the remote and windswept location in Southern Argentine Patagonia, the Lodge remains connected to the outside world through satellite phones, satellite television and high speed internet access. Electricity is provided around the clock with our solar power system.
Food & Drinks:
When they aren’t fishing, anglers enjoy the warmth and hospitality of Southern Argentina. Meals are prepared by the Lodge’s dedicated chef. They are hearty and generous and include the famous Argentinian “Asado” barbecues and dishes prepared with delicious Patagonian lamb raised on nearby estancias. Meals are paired with a wonderful selection of Argentinian wines and a full bar featuring an extensive collection of single malt and blended whiskies is available for guests to enjoy during their stay.
Lago Strobel is located in Argentina’s Santa Cruz province.
How to get there:
Fly into Buenos Aires International Airport (EZE – Pistarini).
You will need to clear customs and transfer to the J. Newbery Domestic Airport (AEP) to make your connecting flight to El Calafate.
Transfer from El Calafate to Jurassic Lake.
Documents Required:
A valid passport is required. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and other Western European nations do not need a visa for tourist trips of up to ninety days.
Itinerary
Trip Duration: 8 Nights / 6.5 Fishing Days
Arrive Buenos Aires International Airport (EZE – Pistarini): You will need to clear customs and transfer to the J. Newbery Domestic Airport (AEP) to make your connecting flight to El Calafate.
A representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.
Overnight at your elected accommodations in El Calafate.
A representative will meet you at your hotel before charter flight to the lodge. Departure time is usually around 8 AM but this may change according to the weather upon arrival at the lodge you can get settled in and then fish the rest of the day.
Six days of guided fishing.
This morning after breakfast charter your flight back to to El Calafate.
Depart Jurassic Lake – Arrive El Calafate.
Domestic flight to Buenos Aires (AEP – J Newbery).
You will need to transfer from the domestic airport (AEP – J. Newbury) to the international airport (EZE – Pistarini) to catch your flight home.
