Hatchet Lake Fishing
Fishing at Hatchet Lake takes place across a large, clear-water northern lake system with extensive shoreline, reefs, bays and deep basins that support a healthy multi-species fishery. Days are typically spent moving between proven structures and seasonal patterns, targeting northern pike in shallow weedy areas and rocky points, lake trout over deeper structure, and walleye along drop-offs and mid-lake humps, with Arctic grayling available in certain areas and on fly-outs. The low angling pressure and short productive season contribute to consistent catch rates and strong average fish size. Anglers can cover significant water by boat each day, adapting techniques and locations based on conditions, which creates a varied and methodical fishing program focused on both numbers and trophy potential.
On the water, guides operate brand new G3 177 Outfitter boats powered by 50 hp Yamaha outboards, a setup that balances stability, range and efficiency for covering large areas of lake. The boats are outfitted with swivel seats and are well suited for casting, trolling and jigging, allowing anglers to fish comfortably throughout a full day. Fuel is included, so there is no restriction on moving between spots or exploring different structures.
Guiding is structured at a 2:1 angler-to-guide ratio, which allows for a personalized and methodical approach.
Accommodation at Hatchet Lake Lodge is designed to provide practical comfort in a remote setting without taking away from the wilderness feel. Guests stay in well-spaced log cabins configured for 1, 2 or 4 people, with individual bedrooms that give privacy for small groups or shared parties. The cabins are positioned to maintain a sense of seclusion and quiet, so even when the lodge is full, each group has its own space to unwind.
Inside, cabins feature running water, hot showers and high-efficiency wood stoves that provide reliable heat during cooler northern mornings and evenings. Hatchet Lake is located in far northern Saskatchewan within the Canadian boreal forest, a region defined by vast freshwater systems, dense forest and very limited development.
Access is exclusively by air, which helps preserve the low fishing pressure. Anglers first travel to Saskatoon, the main gateway city. From there, a scheduled charter flight arranged by the lodge flies directly to the lodge airstrip. Flight time is roughly a couple of hours, placing anglers deep into northern wilderness with no road access. Most itineraries include an overnight in Saskatoon before departure, followed by an early morning charter to the lodge and same-day fishing on arrival. The return follows the same route in reverse.
Day 1 – Arrive in Saskatoon
Guests arrive in Saskatoon on commercial flights and make their way to Delta Hotels by Marriott Saskatoon Downtown. This overnight stop provides a buffer after travel and ensures everyone is ready for the early charter north. Most anglers use the evening to organize tackle and prepare gear for the trip.
Day 2 – Charter North & First Fishing Session
An early morning transfer takes guests to the airport for the lodge charter flight into northern Saskatchewan. After landing in the morning, guests are welcomed with breakfast, cabin check-in and a short orientation. By late morning, anglers head out for their first guided session, getting an introduction to the lake and current patterns. The day ends with dinner and a relaxed evening at the lodge.
Days 3–5 – Full Guided Fishing Days
These are dedicated fishing days built around conditions and angler goals. After breakfast each morning, guests head out with their guide to fish shorelines, reefs, bays and deeper structure for northern pike, lake trout, walleye and grayling. Shore lunches are prepared lakeside, and afternoons continue on productive water. Groups may choose to add a fly-out to explore a different lake. Evenings are spent enjoying dinner, reviewing photos and preparing for the next day. The final night includes packing and getting ready for departure.
Day 6 – Return to Saskatoon
Guests are served breakfast at the lodge before departing by charter flight and arrive back in Saskatoon around midday, with onward flights scheduled for later in the afternoon.
