Fish of this size are exceptionally rare, but the protected waters within the national park are renowned for its large population of trophy fish.

Murchison Falls Nile Perch Fishing
The Victoria-Nile River below Murchison Falls is regarded as one of Africa’s great freshwater fishing destinations and one of the most exciting places in the world to target trophy-sized nile perch. Flowing out of Lake Victoria and cutting through the dramatic landscapes of Murchison Falls National Park, this stretch of river offers anglers a rare combination of trophy fishing, wild scenery, and classic African safari atmosphere.
The main target on this trip is the legendary nile perch, the largest freshwater fish in Africa. These immense predators are famous for their size, strength, and endurance, with fish regularly reaching impressive weights and exceptional specimens exceeding 100 kilograms. In addition to nile perch, tigerfish, a variety of catfish species, and the occasional yellowfish can also be caught.
The prime fishing months are generally during the dry seasons, from December to March and again from June to September. During these periods, water levels tend to be more stable and visibility often improves, creating better conditions for both bait fishing and lure casting. Fishing is usually focused around the waters below the falls, where the river’s force creates deep channels, eddies, oxygen-rich pools, and slower sections that attract large predatory fish.
Anglers can fish from the banks near the base of Murchison Falls or from boats further downstream, where the current becomes easier to manage. Bank fishing offers a dramatic and physical experience, with the thunder of the falls nearby and the river surging through narrow rock formations. Boat fishing allows access to quieter bends, deeper pools, and productive stretches that are difficult to reach on foot. Live bait is often the most effective method for targeting large nile perch, particularly in deeper water and around structure, while casting large lures can produce explosive strikes when fish are actively hunting.
What makes fishing below Murchison Falls so memorable is the setting. Here, the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge only a few meters wide before exploding into a powerful torrent below. Murchison Falls Tented Camp is located inside Murchison Falls National Park, perched above the Victoria-Nile River with sweeping views of the water below. How to get there:
The camp is set on the southern banks of the Victoria-Nile inside Murchison Falls National Park, about a one-hour flight from Entebbe. Anglers typically arrive at Entebbe International Airport on international flights, then transfer to a scenic charter flight bound for Pakuba or Bugungu Airstrip. From the airstrip it’s only a short drive into the park where camp staff meet guests and handle transfers. For those preferring to travel by road, the park can also be reached in about five to six hours from Kampala or Entebbe, but most anglers opt for the faster and more comfortable flight option to maximize their time on the water.
Documents Required:
A valid passport is required. Visa requirements depend on nationality. Travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and most European countries generally require a Uganda tourist visa. Travelers should check the latest requirements and apply through Uganda’s official immigration portal before departure.

Itinerary
Trip Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights / 5 Fishing Days
Day 1:
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and board a one-hour charter flight with Aerolink or Bar Aviation to Pakuba or Bugungu Airstrip. From there you will be transferred to your accommodation on the Nile where you can settle in and enjoy your first evening by the river.
Days 2 – 3:
First two days of guided fishing on the Nile, targeting giant nile perch and other species in the legendary waters below Murchison Falls. You’ll spend your days casting from boats or riverbanks with picnic lunches on the water before returning to camp each evening.
Day 4:
Explore Murchison Falls National Park in the morning. Head out on a guided game drive across the savanna to spot lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and more or take a boat cruise to the base of the falls and then hike up to the top for panoramic views of the Nile thundering through the gorge before. Spend the rest of the day on the river chasing perch.
Days 5 – 6:
Back to the water for two final days of nile perch fishing with your guides. Hunt the 100-pound giants that call the river home and create lasting memories on Africa’s greatest river.
Day 7:
Enjoy breakfast at camp before transferring back to the airstrip for your one-hour charter flight to Entebbe, where you can connect with your international departure.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination to enter Uganda?
Yes. Uganda requires arriving travelers aged one year and older to carry a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, commonly called the yellow card. After a first vaccination, the certificate becomes valid after 10 days and generally remains valid for life. Travelers who cannot receive the vaccine for medical reasons should consult a qualified travel-health specialist well before departure.
Do I need to take malaria medication?
Malaria prevention medication is strongly recommended for travel to Uganda. Speak to a doctor or travel-health clinic about the most suitable option, as some medications must be started before arrival and continued after returning home. Travelers should also use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and trousers during peak mosquito periods, and use mosquito nets where provided.
Do I need a visa for Uganda?
Visa requirements depend on nationality, and travelers should not assume they are visa-exempt. Most travelers who require a tourist visa must apply through Uganda’s official electronic immigration system before departure. Entry requirements can change, so travelers should check the latest official guidance before booking international flights.
What travel insurance should I have?
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and is not included in the package. Your policy should cover overseas medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, baggage, guided fishing and safari activities. Murchison Falls is remote, so advanced medical care may require transportation to Entebbe or Kampala.
How do I travel from Entebbe to Murchison Falls?
International travelers normally arrive at Entebbe International Airport. The package includes return flights between Entebbe and an airstrip serving Murchison Falls, followed by a lodge transfer.
How much luggage can I take on the domestic flight?
Domestic safari flights have a total luggage allowance of approximately 15 kilograms, or 33 pounds, per person. Soft-sided bags are normally preferred because the aircraft have limited storage space. Oversized luggage, camera equipment and additional baggage should be discussed before departure.
