The Amazon Grand Slam expedition is all about variety, challenge, and trophy potential. Across two distinct river systems — the powerful Orinoco and the secluded Caño Bocón — anglers will target some of South America’s most iconic species. In the Orinoco, expect high-action sessions chasing explosive Payara in rapid water and Peacock Bass in expansive lagoons. These fish are known for aggressive strikes, acrobatic fights, and size ranges that push into the 20+ pound class, offering both excitement and satisfaction for seasoned anglers.
In Caño Bocón, the focus shifts to a more technical and intimate jungle fishing experience. Here, anglers cast into dark, tannin-stained lagoons where monster Peacock Bass lie in wait. Bites are fewer, but the potential for a personal best is real. The fishing is complemented by expert guides, locally crafted gear support, and indigenous knowledge that adds depth to every outing. Whether you’re after fast-paced action or the hunt for a true giant, this trip delivers a complete Amazonian angling experience.
Accommodation on the Amazon Grand Slam expedition is split between two distinct lodges, each offering a unique experience that blends comfort with immersion in the wild. The Orinoco River Lodge, set within a 14,000-hectare private reserve, offers modern amenities in a serene riverside setting. Spacious cabins come equipped with air conditioning, private decks overlooking the river, and full housekeeping services. Guests can unwind after a day on the water with cold drinks at the Peacock Bar, enjoy meals prepared by an executive chef, and take in sunset views from the treetop terrace. It’s an ideal mix of luxury and nature, crafted for anglers who value both adventure and relaxation.
In contrast, DelRio Lodge is designed for those seeking a deeper connection to the jungle. Located in the heart of the rainforest and built in harmony with the indigenous community of El Niñal, this eco-lodge prioritizes sustainability and cultural integration. No trees were cut to build its cabins, which are surrounded by pristine forest and the sounds of Amazon wildlife. Though more rustic, DelRio still offers key comforts like mosquito nets, electricity, hammocks, and attentive service. It’s an authentic, off-the-grid retreat where the jungle is not just your backdrop, but a constant companion.
The Amazon Grand Slam expedition takes place in eastern Colombia, with fishing based on the Orinoco and Caño Bocón rivers. The trip begins in Bogotá, the capital, where guests spend the first night. From there, a domestic flight takes you to the town of Inírida, followed by a river transfer to the lodge. Travel to the region is remote but well-coordinated by the operator.
International travelers should fly into El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, which is the main entry point for Colombia. Frequently Asked Questions:
When is the best season for Peacock Bass fishing in Colombia and the Amazon?
The peak season runs during the low-water months, typically December through March. As water levels drop, fish concentrate in lagoons and river channels, making them easier to target. This period offers the best chance for both numbers of fish and true giants.
What size Peacock Bass can I expect to catch in Colombia?
Anglers regularly land Peacock Bass in the 10–20 lb range, with fish over 20 lbs considered trophy-class. Colombia is famous for producing some of the largest Peacock Bass in the world, with chances at IGFA-record caliber fish pushing beyond 25 lbs.
What makes the Amazon Grand Slam trip unique and different to other Amazon fishing trips?
Dual-River Adventure Across Iconic Systems
Rather than sticking to one territory, this expedition takes you through two dramatically different river ecosystems—the mighty Orinoco and the secluded Caño Bocón. Expect explosive action chasing Peacock Bass in expansive, sunlit lagoons, then pivot to fast‑moving waters where Payara ( “vampire fish”) lurk in rapids. This dynamic contrast elevates the thrill and variety beyond any single‑river trip.
What else can I experience in Colombia besides Peacock Bass fishing?
Many anglers combine their fishing adventure with exploring Colombia’s diverse culture and landscapes. Options include visiting Bogotá’s historic districts, Medellín’s vibrant nightlife, Cartagena’s colonial coast, or coffee plantations in the Andes. Wildlife lovers will also find birdwatching, Amazon river dolphin encounters, and jungle treks that complement a world-class fishing trip.
