Golden Mahseer Fishing
Golden Mahseer are known as the “Tiger of the River,” and few freshwater fish are better suited to that name. They inhabit powerful Himalayan river systems, where deep pools, fast runs and strong currents give hooked fish every opportunity to use their strength.
The fishing on this trip is centred around the rivers of Uttarakhand, including the waters near Pancheshwar at the confluence of the Saryu and Mahakali. This area has a long-standing reputation among travelling anglers and provides access to varied water, from broad river sections and current seams to deeper holding areas. Depending on water levels, clarity and fish activity, anglers may use spinning tackle, bait, or fly-fishing techniques. Local guides assess the conditions each day and help select the most suitable approach. Fishing may require patience and persistence, but every cast carries the possibility of encountering one of the most iconic freshwater fish in Asia.
The primary fishing periods are March through June and September through November. Conditions vary throughout these seasons, so the exact fishing plan is adapted to river levels and local conditions during the trip. All golden mahseer fishing is conducted on a catch-and-release basis. Fish are handled carefully and returned to the river, helping preserve the fishery and supporting the future of this extraordinary species.
The river lodge is very tastefully constructed to be a part of the landscape: simple and eco friendly yet conscious of every comfort and luxury. The interiors are tastefully done with campaign furniture, like you’d normally expect in an African luxury lodge. Each cottage is made with a mixture of mud and hay plastered walls that have a thatched roof overhead. This not only serves to keep the cottages comfortable for the weather as well as sustainable, but also lends a rustic, comfortable and cosy charm to them.
At the border of India and Nepal, in the Indian state of Uttrakhand, lies the sleepy village of Pancheshwar. The Golden Mahseer has put Pancheshwar on the world map for anglers from all over the globe who are keen to test their wits against the hard fighting Mahseer. Pancheshwar, considered the Mecca for Mahseer fishing in North India, is where the Saryu River meets the Mahakali River and this confluence has invariably rewarded anglers with trophy catches.
