Rio Azul Lodge

Fishing at Rio Azul is divided between the Govuro estuary and the open Indian Ocean. The estuary contains more than 50 square kilometres of mangrove channels, mudflats, sandbanks and deeper tidal water. Anglers can cast flies, soft plastics and small lures around the mangroves or troll and drift through the main channels. Common targets include grunter, kingfish, barracuda, rock cod, river snapper, perch and estuary cod.

Each room is allocated a 12-foot aluminium estuary boat equipped with a 15-horsepower Yamaha outboard, electric trolling motor, marine radio and cooler box. Anglers receive an introduction to the boat and its equipment before using it. A local skipper can be hired for anglers who prefer guided fishing or do not want to operate the boat themselves.

Offshore fishing is offered as a half-day or full-day charter from two 31-foot boats, each carrying up to six anglers. The nearest reefs are around ten minutes from the lodge, while longer trips can reach offshore structure extending towards the 25-mile reef north of Bazaruto Island. Techniques include trolling, plugging, jigging, fly fishing and drifting natural bait. Possible targets include black, blue and striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado, king mackerel, kingfish, barracuda and reef species.

Estuary fishing is available throughout the year, while the best offshore target depends on the season. Sailfish are generally most prominent from June through September. Blue and striped marlin are commonly targeted from September into January, while October through January is the principal black marlin period. Offshore tackle can be supplied for an additional charge, lures are charged according to use, and natural bait is normally provided by the lodge when available.

Rio Azul has six thatched beachfront chalets and two private beachfront villas. The lodge is built in a traditional Mozambican style using local hardwoods, open spaces and natural thatch, with accommodation overlooking the estuary and Indian Ocean.

The chalets can be configured with a double bed or twin beds and accommodate two adults, with space for one young child. Each has an ensuite bathroom with a shower and double vanity, a private ocean-facing patio and direct access to the beach.

The two villas are designed for families and private groups. Each can accommodate up to six adults and four children and includes three ensuite bedrooms, additional loft accommodation, indoor and outdoor living areas, a kitchen, dining space and a private deck with its own swimming pool.

The main lodge includes a dining area, lounge, bar, deck and shared swimming pool. Meals focus on locally caught seafood, fresh produce and Portuguese and Mozambican flavours, including prawns, crab, lobster, calamari and peri-peri dishes. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice. Wi-Fi is available, although service should be expected to reflect the lodge’s remote setting.

Rio Azul Lodge is located at Bartholomeu Diaz Point near Inhassoro in Mozambique’s Inhambane Province. The lodge lies around 130 kilometres north of Vilanculos, between the Govuro estuary and the Indian Ocean.

The most convenient arrival point is Vilanculos Airport. International anglers commonly travel through Johannesburg before taking a regional flight to Vilanculos. From the airport, a prearranged vehicle transfer to the lodge takes approximately two to two-and-a-half hours, depending on road and beach conditions. The final section may require a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Anglers can also reach the lodge by self-driving, although the journey is long and the final access requires a suitable vehicle. Drivers should request current directions and road information before departure, particularly during periods of heavy rain.

Day 1: Arrival at Rio Azul Lodge
Arrive at Vilanculos Airport and take the prearranged road transfer north to Rio Azul. After checking into the chalet or villa, anglers receive an introduction to the lodge and their assigned estuary boat. The evening includes a sunset cruise followed by dinner.

Day 2: Estuary Fishing
Spend the day exploring the Govuro estuary, concentrating on mangrove edges, deep channels and tidal areas for grunter, kingfish, snapper, barracuda and estuary cod. Anglers can fish independently or arrange a local skipper.

Day 3: Offshore Fishing
Depart aboard one of the lodge’s 31-foot boats for a full day of guided offshore fishing. The day may involve trolling for billfish and pelagic species, casting plugs around reefs or jigging deeper structure.

Day 4: Estuary and Surf Fishing
Fish the estuary during the most productive tidal period before exploring the shoreline around the lodge. The remainder of the day can be spent fishing, kayaking or relaxing at the lodge.

Day 5: Offshore Fishing
Return to the ocean for a second full fishing day. The guides select the area and techniques according to sea conditions, seasonal species and recent activity.

Day 6: Flexible Fishing Day
Use the final full day for additional estuary fishing, a half-day offshore charter or an excursion towards Paradise Island and the Bazaruto Archipelago. The exact program can be adjusted around the interests of the anglers.

Day 7: Departure
After breakfast, check out and take the road transfer to Vilanculos Airport for the onward flight

What level of fishing experience is required?
Rio Azul is suitable for anglers with a wide range of experience. The estuary provides accessible light-tackle fishing, while guided offshore charters can accommodate anglers who have never targeted large saltwater species. Experienced anglers can bring specialist fly, jigging or popping equipment.

Can anglers operate the estuary boats themselves?
Yes. Each chalet or villa is allocated a small motorised estuary boat, and anglers receive an introduction to its operation and safety equipment. A local skipper can be hired for anglers who prefer guided fishing.

How many anglers can fish from the offshore boats?
Each 31-foot offshore boat can accommodate up to six anglers. Smaller groups may have more fishing space, particularly when casting plugs, working jigs or fly fishing.

Is fishing equipment included?
The assigned estuary boat is included with the accommodation. Offshore tackle is available for a nominal rental charge, while lures are charged at the applicable price. Natural bait such as prawns, squid and fish is normally provided when available. Anglers using specialist fly, popping or jigging equipment should bring their own tackle.

What is the best time to visit?
Estuary fishing is available throughout the year. June through September is a strong period for sailfish, while September through January provides opportunities for blue and striped marlin. Black marlin are most commonly targeted from October through January.

Can anglers fly fish at Rio Azul?
Yes. The mangrove channels and drifting estuary boats provide opportunities for light-tackle saltwater fly fishing. Fly fishing can also be arranged offshore, although anglers should bring their own specialist rods, reels, lines, leaders and flies.

Are meals included?
Yes. The standard accommodation rate includes all daily meals, tea and coffee. Other beverages, bar purchases and special private dining arrangements should be confirmed separately.
