Piraiba Lodge is a specialist freshwater fishing lodge in Suriname on the Corentyne River, one of the major river systems running through the Guiana Shield. The operation gives anglers access to as much as 250 kilometres of river, with giant piraiba catfish forming the main focus. Redtail catfish, shovelnose catfish, peacock bass, freshwater drum and tarpon add considerable variety. With a maximum capacity of ten anglers, air-conditioned accommodation and two anglers assigned to each guide and boat, the lodge offers a small-group fishing experience in a remote part of Suriname.
Fishing at Piraiba Lodge is built around the pursuit of giant piraiba, one of the largest and most powerful freshwater catfish found in South America. These fish are normally targeted with heavy bait-fishing equipment in the deeper sections of the Corentyne River, including channels, bends, current seams and areas where baitfish gather. Natural bait is supplied as part of the package, while guides manage boat positioning and help anglers handle the heavy tackle required for these exceptionally strong fish.
The river supports a broad range of secondary species. Redtail catfish, dourada, piramutaba and tiger shovelnose catfish may be encountered while fishing the deeper water, while peacock bass and freshwater drum provide opportunities with artificial lures when river levels are suitable. Tarpon are also present in parts of the system, giving anglers the unusual possibility of encountering a major saltwater game fish far inside a tropical river environment.
The fishing season runs from May through September. River levels influence the available fishing areas and the range of species that can be targeted, particularly peacock bass and other lure-fishing species. Guides adjust each day around water level, current, recent activity and the preferred methods of the anglers.
Fishing is carried out from boats powered by 40-horsepower outboards, with two anglers and one guide assigned to each boat. The standard package includes five full fishing days. Anglers should expect long periods on the water, tropical heat and the possibility of heavy rain, while remaining prepared for fish capable of placing considerable strain on rods, reels, line and terminal tackle.
Piraiba Lodge accommodates a maximum of ten anglers in air-conditioned double rooms. Accommodation is practical and designed around the needs of anglers spending full days on the river, with shared occupancy forming the basis of the standard package.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are included throughout the lodge stay. Water, soft drinks and beer are also provided. Lunch arrangements may vary according to the fishing plan, with meals taken at the lodge or carried aboard for longer days away from the accommodation.
Laundry service is included, allowing anglers to travel with a relatively small amount of lightweight fishing clothing. Satellite internet is also available, although the remote location means service may be less consistent than in Paramaribo.
The lodge should be viewed as a comfortable remote fishing base rather than a conventional resort. Its main advantages are air-conditioned rooms, a small number of anglers and direct access to an extensive section of the Corentyne River.
Piraiba Lodge is located on the Corentyne River in Suriname. There is no practical road journey directly to the lodge, so the standard itinerary combines an overnight stay in Paramaribo with a charter flight and boat transfer.
International anglers first fly into Paramaribo. The package includes one hotel night in the city with breakfast. Anglers arriving before the main travel day are responsible for any additional accommodation, meals and transfers not listed in the confirmed itinerary.
On Sunday morning, anglers transfer from the hotel to the local fishing shop before continuing to the airport. The charter flight normally departs at approximately 1:00 pm and takes around one hour. On landing, the group continues by boat for approximately 30 minutes to Piraiba Lodge.
The return journey begins on Saturday morning, with departure from the lodge scheduled for approximately 9:00 am. Anglers return by boat and charter aircraft to Paramaribo before transferring to the international airport.

Friday: Arrival in Paramaribo
Arrive in Paramaribo, Suriname. Transfer to the arranged hotel and prepare for the journey to the lodge. The precise arrangements may be adjusted around the anglers’ international flight schedules.
Saturday: Travel to Piraiba Lodge and Afternoon Fishing
Depart Paramaribo for the lodge using the included charter service. After arriving and settling into the accommodation, anglers begin with an afternoon fishing session.
Sunday to Friday: Full Fishing Days
Spend six full days fishing the river system for giant piraiba and other species. Two anglers normally fish with each guide, with meals, soft drinks and beer provided during the lodge stay.
Saturday: Return to Paramaribo
Leave the lodge and return to Paramaribo. Spend one night at the arranged city hotel.
Sunday: Departure from Suriname
Transfer to the airport for the onward international flight.
What level of fishing experience is required?
Piraiba Lodge can accommodate anglers who are new to tropical catfish fishing as well as those with previous Amazon experience. Guides handle navigation, bait selection and boat positioning. Anglers should still be prepared to use very heavy equipment and apply sustained pressure during the fight.

Giant piraiba catfish are the principal target. Other possible catches include redtail catfish, dourada, piramutaba, tiger shovelnose catfish, peacock bass, freshwater drum and tarpon.

How many anglers fish from each boat?
Each boat normally carries two anglers and one guide. The lodge accommodates no more than ten anglers, allowing the operation to run a maximum of five fishing boats.
What tackle is required for piraiba?
Anglers need heavy boat or catfish rods, powerful reels with high line capacity, strong braided line and abrasion-resistant leaders. Hooks, swivels and other terminal components must be suitable for exceptionally large fish. A detailed tackle list should be obtained before departure.
Can anglers target peacock bass and tarpon?
Yes. Peacock bass, tarpon and freshwater drum are among the secondary species available. Access and fishing quality depend on water level, location and the amount of time anglers wish to spend away from the main piraiba program.
Is internet available?
Yes. Satellite internet is available at the lodge. Anglers should expect a basic remote connection and should not rely on uninterrupted service for large uploads or time-sensitive work.
