Hawk Lake Lodge

Fishing at Hawk Lake Lodge takes place across roughly 20 lakes covering more than 30 square miles of Canadian Shield water. Hawk Lake itself covers approximately 2,600 acres and contains rocky shorelines, islands, sheltered bays, reefs and deep drop-offs. Anglers can also reserve individual out-lakes, many of which are reached by a short portage or ATV transfer and may have only one lodge boat available. This gives anglers the opportunity to spend a day as the only group fishing an entire lake.

Smallmouth bass are the most consistent species throughout the season, with fish available on rocky banks, points, submerged timber, reefs and deeper summer structure. Trophy walleye are another major draw, particularly from the May opening through late June and early July, when cooler water brings larger fish into shallower areas. Northern pike are found in several lakes, while lake trout are particularly accessible during the cooler early season. Select lakes also hold black crappie.

Anglers can fish with spinning, baitcasting or fly tackle. The standard package is self-guided, allowing anglers to set their own daily schedule and fish from early morning until sunset. Professional guides can be booked separately and are particularly useful for first-time anglers, families or those wanting to learn the most productive areas and techniques. Maps and depth charts are provided for each lake.

Hawk Lake operates as a catch-and-release fishery, with barbless hooks required. Main-lake fishing is from 18-foot Crestliner boats with 50-horsepower Yamaha outboards, electronic trolling motors and modern fish-finding electronics. Out-lakes are equipped with 16-foot Lund boats and smaller four-stroke engines. Boats, motors and fuel are included, and complimentary spinning outfits are available for anglers who do not wish to travel with rods and reels.

Anglers stay in private lakeside cabins with between one and four bedrooms. Cabins can accommodate from one to eight anglers and include at least one private bathroom, electric heating, a furnished living room, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and private deck. Each cabin also has its own outdoor hot tub overlooking the lake.

Soft drinks and snacks are placed in the cabin and replenished daily. Wi-Fi is available throughout the lodge, and daily housekeeping includes fresh towels. Cabins are allocated according to group size, with larger groups generally sharing bedrooms unless a private-bedroom upgrade has been arranged.

Three meals are served each day. Breakfast includes a buffet and cooked-to-order options, while early-rising anglers can request a takeaway breakfast in their cabin the night before. Lunch can be eaten at the lodge, packed for the boat or prepared as a traditional shore lunch. Dinner is served in the main lodge following a complimentary social hour with hors d’oeuvres and selected alcoholic drinks.

Additional facilities include a dry sauna, fitness room, pool table, poker table, canoes and kayaks. Each cabin’s hot tub provides a private place to relax after fishing, while Kenora is close enough for shopping or other activities during a longer stay.

Hawk Lake Lodge is located near Kenora in northwestern Ontario. It is a drive-to property, so anglers can arrive in their own vehicle without relying on a floatplane or charter flight. Despite the road access, the lodge’s fishing waters remain private, with no public boat launches on Hawk Lake and highly restricted access to the surrounding out-lakes.

Winnipeg International Airport in Manitoba and International Falls Airport in Minnesota are both approximately three hours from the lodge by road. Anglers can rent a vehicle or arrange a private shuttle from either airport.

Kenora Airport is approximately 20 to 25 minutes from the lodge and can accommodate private aircraft. Shuttle transfers can be arranged from Kenora, while private floatplane charters may also be organised to land directly at the lodge.

Day 1: Arrival at Hawk Lake Lodge
Arrive at the lodge from 2:00 pm and check into the private cabin. Anglers receive an introduction to the property, boats, lake maps and catch-and-release procedures. There may be time for an afternoon fishing session before the evening social hour and dinner.

Days 2 to 5: Fishing Days
Anglers can fish Hawk Lake, reserve one of the private out-lakes or combine both during the stay. Breakfast is served at the lodge, although takeaway breakfasts can be requested for an early start. Lunch can be packed, eaten at the lodge or prepared beside the water. Anglers may fish independently or with a guide and can return to the water after dinner when daylight allows.

Day 6: Departure
After breakfast, anglers check out by 10:00 am and begin the drive to Kenora, Winnipeg, International Falls or their next destination.

Is guiding included?
No. The standard package is self-guided, with boats, motors, fuel, maps and depth charts supplied. Professional guiding is available for an additional charge and should be reserved when the lodge booking is made.

What is the best time to visit?
The 2026 season runs from May 21 through August 29. Late May through early July is the strongest period for trophy walleye and shallow-water lake trout. Smallmouth bass can be targeted throughout the season, with topwater and warm-water fishing becoming increasingly productive during summer.

Do anglers need to bring rods and reels?
Anglers can bring their own equipment, but complimentary spinning rods and reels are available. Lures, flies and terminal tackle are not included, although the lodge has a tackle and fly shop. Guides provide the necessary tackle during a guided day.

How are the private out-lakes reached?
Access varies by lake. Some are reached by boat and a short portage, while others require an ATV transfer followed by a walk. Boats and motors are positioned on the out-lakes, so anglers do not need to carry boats through the portages. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

How many anglers use each boat?
Bookings are normally planned around two anglers per main-lake boat. The 18-foot boats can accommodate up to four, while the smaller out-lake boats are most comfortable with two anglers or two anglers and a guide.

Is a fishing licence required?
Yes. Anglers need an Ontario fishing licence and Outdoors Card where applicable. These are not included but can be purchased at the lodge or arranged online before travel.

What clothing should anglers bring?
Weather can range from cool spring mornings to hot summer afternoons. Anglers should bring layered clothing, dependable rainwear, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen and good walking shoes for the out-lake trails. A swimsuit is useful for the lake, sauna and private cabin hot tub.
