Battle Hill Lodge 🇮🇸
Battle Hill Lodge is a small fly-fishing lodge in southeast Iceland, set close to the Fossálar River and within easy reach of several productive sea trout fisheries. The lodge is best known for access to wild sea-run brown trout, with additional opportunities for Arctic char, resident brown trout and Atlantic salmon. Anglers fish a mix of glacial channels, clear tributaries, meadow water and canyon pools, while returning each evening to a comfortable farmhouse-style lodge with full-board meals and a relaxed, intimate atmosphere.
The fishing at Battle Hill Lodge is centred on wild sea-run brown trout moving through the Skaftá watershed. These fish are known for their size, strength and aggressive takes, with many falling into the 5 to 20-pound range. Anglers may encounter bright, newly arrived fish in the lower system, as well as darker trout that have spent longer in freshwater. The programme is fly-only and catch-and-release, with two anglers normally sharing a guide.
Battle Hill gives anglers access to three very different fisheries. Vatnamót is broad, open and glacial, with braided channels and long casting water suited to double-handed rods, swung flies and stripped streamers. Fossálar is smaller and clearer, with lava-lined pools, undercut banks and tighter runs that favour single-handed rods, nymphs, streamers and occasional surface fishing. Geirlandsá offers meadow water and more technical canyon sections, with a mix of pools, pockets and confined runs where accurate presentation matters.
The season is split between spring and autumn. Spring fishing targets sea trout that have remained in the system over winter, while autumn brings fresh fish returning from the sea. River levels, water temperature and fish movement shape each day, so anglers may rotate between rivers and techniques as guides track the best conditions.
Battle Hill Lodge is a renovated farmhouse in southeast Iceland, offering a small and informal base for up to ten anglers. Accommodation is arranged across four twin rooms and two single rooms, with shared bathroom facilities. The bedrooms are comfortable and practical, while the main lodge includes a dining room, sitting area, kitchen and outdoor space overlooking the surrounding countryside.
The lodge operates on a full-board basis, with breakfast before fishing, a packed streamside lunch and a substantial evening meal. Menus make use of local ingredients and often combine Icelandic dishes with Argentine influences. Wi-Fi is available, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed and personal, making the lodge well suited to anglers who prefer a small-group fishing experience rather than a large or highly formal property.
Battle Hill Lodge is located in southeast Iceland, around 15 to 20 minutes from the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and close to Iceland’s main Ring Road. The lodge is approximately three hours by road from Reykjavík and about three and a half hours from Keflavík International Airport, making it straightforward to reach while still offering a quiet and remote setting.
Anglers normally fly into Keflavík and spend a night in Reykjavík before joining the scheduled lodge transfer the following morning. The drive to Battle Hill takes around three hours, with arrival in time to settle in and begin the first fishing session that afternoon. At the end of the stay, anglers return to Reykjavík after breakfast, usually arriving later in the day. Transfers are generally included between Reykjavík and the lodge, while airport transfers and Reykjavík accommodation should be arranged separately unless confirmed as part of the package.

What tackle should anglers bring?
Anglers should bring both single-handed and double-handed equipment where possible. A 9 to 10-foot 7-weight is useful for the smaller rivers, while a 12 to 13-foot 7-weight two-handed rod is well suited to the larger Vatnamót system. Floating, intermediate and sink-tip lines are recommended, along with streamers, tube flies and nymphs.
How demanding is the fishing?
All fishing is done on foot and can involve wading over sand, gravel, lava rock and uneven riverbanks. Some water is straightforward, while the broad glacial channels and upper canyon sections can be more physically demanding. Anglers should be comfortable walking and wading for a full fishing day.
Are rooms and bathrooms private?
The lodge has twin and single bedrooms, but bathrooms are shared. Accommodation is comfortable and practical rather than luxurious, and the small lodge capacity creates a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
Are transfers from the airport included?
Scheduled transfers between Reykjavík and Battle Hill Lodge are generally included. Transfers between Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík, as well as any Reykjavík hotel nights, are normally arranged separately unless specifically included in the confirmed package.
