Fishing at Agua Boa is built around fly fishing for peacock bass in a clear-water tributary of the Amazon. During the dry season, from October through March, the river gradually drops and more of its pale sand bottom becomes visible. When conditions are right, anglers can spot peacock bass moving through the shallows before making a cast. Fishing also takes place along riverbanks, deeper channels, lagoons and oxbow lakes, so there are still plenty of opportunities when higher water, rain or cloud cover reduces visibility.

Peacock bass are the main target, from smaller butterfly peacocks to the larger temensis varieties. Anglers may also encounter arowana, pacu, piranha and arapaima throughout the week. Two anglers normally share a boat and guide, with each day spent exploring a different stretch of river or one of its connected lakes. In the shallower sections, guides often pole the boat quietly across the flats, and anglers may sometimes step out to fish from firm sandbars.

Agua Boa operates as a fly-fishing-only lodge and requires single, barbless hooks. Fishing days are long and can involve warm weather and steady casting, but the varied water keeps the experience interesting from one day to the next. The guides know the river closely and adjust the approach according to water level, light and fish movement, helping anglers make the most of both sight-fishing opportunities and more traditional casting along cover.

After a full day on the river, Agua Boa offers anglers a comfortable place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. The lodge has just six private chalets, each set along the riverbank with uninterrupted views over the Água Boa River. Inside, anglers have air conditioning, two beds, Wi-Fi, a minibar and plenty of room for fishing gear, while the spacious en-suite bathrooms and solar-heated showers provide a welcome level of comfort in such a remote part of the Amazon. Each chalet also has its own covered porch with seating and rod racks, making it an ideal place to unwind, prepare tackle or watch the river as the day comes to an end.

The main lodge has a relaxed, sociable atmosphere, with a dining room, bar, lounge and game room where anglers can gather after fishing. Outside, landscaped gardens lead to a large swimming pool overlooking the river, offering the perfect place to cool off before dinner. With its small capacity, riverfront setting and practical comforts, Agua Boa feels personal and unhurried, allowing anglers to experience the Amazon without giving up the conveniences that make a week-long fishing trip more enjoyable.

Agua Boa Amazon Lodge sits on a remote clear-water tributary of the Rio Branco, nearly 200 miles northwest of Manaus. The river winds through an almost uninhabited landscape of rainforest, savannah, white-sand flats, lagoons and oxbow lakes. Although the setting feels exceptionally isolated, reaching the lodge is straightforward. Anglers fly directly from Manaus to the lodge’s private runway, avoiding the additional floatplane or riverboat transfers required by many Amazon operations.

Anglers arrive in Manaus on Thursday or Friday and spend at least one night in the city before the Saturday charter. Early Saturday morning, anglers are collected from their hotel and transferred to Flores Airport, where the charter departs around sunrise. The flight to Agua Boa takes approximately 90 minutes, arriving early enough for breakfast, time to settle into the chalets and a half-day of fishing that afternoon.

Friday: Arrive in Manaus
Anglers arrive in Manaus and are met at the airport for the transfer to their hotel. The overnight stay in Manaus is arranged separately and gives anglers time to rest before the early departure the following morning.

Saturday: Fly to Agua Boa and begin fishing
Anglers are collected from their Manaus hotel early in the morning and transferred to Flores Airport for the charter flight to the lodge. The flight takes approximately 90 minutes and lands directly on Agua Boa’s private runway. After breakfast, a lodge orientation and time to settle into the chalets, anglers head onto the river for their first afternoon of fishing.

Sunday to Friday: Six full fishing days
Each morning begins with breakfast at the lodge before anglers depart with their guide. Two anglers normally share a boat, exploring a different section of the river, lagoon or oxbow lake each day. Fishing may include sight casting over shallow white-sand flats, working riverbanks and channels, or targeting fish in connected lakes. Lunch is taken on the water, followed by an afternoon fishing session before returning to the lodge.

After fishing, anglers can relax on their private porch, cool off in the swimming pool or meet at the bar before dinner. Evenings are informal, with time to enjoy a meal, prepare tackle for the next day and discuss the day’s fishing.

Saturday: Return to Manaus
After breakfast, anglers board the charter flight back to Manaus. On arrival, they are transferred to either the international airport or a Manaus hotel. Onward flights should be booked for later in the afternoon to allow enough time for the charter and ground transfer.

What fishing equipment should anglers bring?
Most anglers bring 8- or 9-weight fly rods, tropical fly lines, strong leaders and a selection of streamers and surface flies. Heavier equipment may be useful for anglers specifically targeting arapaima. Anglers should bring their own flies, leaders and tippet, although the lodge keeps a limited supply of replacement equipment and flies.

Will anglers have internet or mobile phone service?
There is no mobile phone service at Agua Boa, but Starlink Wi-Fi is available at the lodge. Anglers can normally send messages and make internet calls using WhatsApp or Wi-Fi calling while at the property. There is no internet connection during the fishing day once the boats leave the lodge.

What insurance and paperwork are required?
Medical evacuation insurance is mandatory because the lodge is in a remote area with limited access to medical facilities. Travel cancellation insurance is also strongly recommended.

How many anglers fish from each boat?
Two anglers normally share a boat and guide. The pair usually stays together throughout the week, which helps the guide plan different sections of the river and avoid repeating the same water unnecessarily.

Is laundry provided, and how much clothing should anglers pack?
Daily laundry service is included, allowing anglers to pack relatively lightly. Clothing placed in the laundry during the designated collection period is normally returned the following day. Two or three fishing shirts, two pairs of fishing trousers, camp clothing, a swimsuit and a lightweight rain jacket should be sufficient for most anglers.
