Papua New Guinea Fishing
The Kimbe and Baia areas of West New Britain are best known for their Papuan black bass and spottail bass fishing. These river fish have built a mean reputation among anglers and are often described as pound for pound some of the strongest fighting fish in the world. Black bass are usually the main attraction, but spottail bass are equally respected for their power and aggressive nature.
The rivers and estuaries also hold mangrove jack and giant trevally, adding variety to a trip that is often planned around the two bass species. Conditions vary between the Kimbe and Baia areas, but both offer access to remote waterways surrounded by dense tropical forest, mangroves and largely undeveloped coastline.
Outside the rivers, West New Britain also has a wide range of saltwater fishing. The waters around Kimbe Bay and the Bismarck Sea support reef, coastal and offshore species, including coral trout, red bass, jobfish, Spanish mackerel, tuna, mahi-mahi, sailfish, marlin and GT. This mix of river and ocean fishing allows anglers to target several very different species during the same trip.
For nearly two decades, Baia has built deep ties with local landowners and villagers, ensuring that fishing here not only delivers world-class angling but also supports sustainable tourism. This partnership has turned Baia into a legendary destination, showcased on international programs like Monster Fish, River Monsters, Extreme Fishing with Robson Green, and Escape with ET.
