What is the best season for Golden Mahseer fishing in India?

The Golden Mahseer fishing season runs from October to April. During these months, the Himalayan and Northern Indian rivers run clear after the monsoon, and water levels are ideal. The prime months being March – June and September to November.

Golden Mahseer are among the largest freshwater game fish in the world. While most catches on guided trips range between 20 and 60 lbs, trophy fish exceeding 70 lbs have been recorded. IGFA record.

The most renowned Golden Mahseer rivers include the Ramganga, Saryu, and Kali, as well as tributaries of the upper Ganges. These rivers are surrounded by jungle, foothills, and remote Himalayan scenery, offering anglers both world-class fishing and an authentic wilderness setting.

Both methods are effective. Fly anglers typically use 9–10 wt rods with large streamers that imitate baitfish, while spin fishermen use medium-heavy tackle with lures, spoons, or live bait. Golden Mahseer are powerful and unpredictable fighters, making either method challenging and rewarding.

For spinning,  8-9 ft rods, reels with 20–30 lb drag, and 30–80 lb braid. For fly fishing, floating or sink-tip lines, and large durable streamers. Polarized sunglasses, quick-dry clothing, and a waterproof bag are also highly recommended.

Yes. Golden Mahseer are a protected species in India, and all reputable outfitters follow a strict catch-and-release policy. This ensures the survival of the species and helps maintain the rivers for future generations of anglers.

Golden Mahseer are not just big and powerful — they inhabit fast-flowing Himalayan rivers, often surrounded by jungle, elephants, leopards, and birdlife. The combination of trophy fish and wild, remote settings makes Mahseer fishing one of the most immersive freshwater angling experiences in the world.
