Fishing at Turneffe Island Resort in Belize offers some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the Caribbean, set against the backdrop of the country’s diverse and pristine marine ecosystems. Belize, home to the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, is a world-renowned destination for anglers, with its extensive flats, lagoons, and mangrove estuaries supporting an abundance of saltwater gamefish. The Turneffe Atoll, located about 30 miles off the coast of Belize City, is the largest atoll in the country and provides a prime environment for bonefish, permit, and tarpon, making it a top destination for those pursuing a Grand Slam.
The flats surrounding Turneffe Island Resort are known for their exceptional bonefish populations, with large schools often seen tailing in shallow water. These fish are present year-round and provide an excellent opportunity for both novice and experienced fly anglers. Permit fishing at Turneffe is among the best in the world, with these elusive fish found patrolling deeper flats and channel edges. Due to their selective feeding habits and wariness, landing a permit on the fly is considered one of the greatest challenges in saltwater fly fishing. Tarpon, particularly abundant from late spring through early fall, inhabit the deeper channels and mangrove lagoons, where they can be seen rolling on the surface or ambushing baitfish. The resort provides expert guides who specialize in sight fishing, offering anglers the best chance of success in these clear, shallow waters.
Turneffe Island Resort offers a remote yet comfortable setting, combining world-class fishing with high-end accommodations and personalized service. The resort is fully equipped to cater to fly anglers, with skiffs designed for poling the flats and an experienced team of guides who have extensive knowledge of the atoll’s waters. Given its location within a protected marine reserve, the fishery remains in excellent condition, with catch-and-release practices ensuring sustainability. For fly fishing enthusiasts looking for an unspoiled environment with year-round opportunities to target some of the most sought-after saltwater species, Turneffe Island Resort stands out as one of the premier destinations in Belize.
