The fishing at Long Valley Lodge is defined by both variety and quality. Anglers have the opportunity to pursue Atlantic salmon, brown trout, Arctic char, and sea-run trout, often within the same trip. The lodge’s location on the Blanda River provides access to productive pools where salmon runs peak during the summer months, while nearby tributaries and valley streams offer consistent trout and char fishing. The diversity of water types, from fast-flowing main channels to quieter side streams, allows guests to experience a range of techniques, whether swinging flies for salmon or sight-casting to rising trout.
What makes the experience particularly rewarding is the combination of excellent guiding and well-managed waters. Experienced guides are on hand to match anglers with the right stretches and flies for prevailing conditions, while the lodge’s casting instruction ensures both beginners and seasoned anglers can refine their skills. Limited rod access and careful catch-and-release practices help keep fish stocks strong, giving visitors a realistic chance at Iceland’s coveted “Grand Slam” of salmon, char, trout, and sea trout during a single stay.
The lodge offers a comfortable base designed to balance wilderness with modern convenience. Long Valley Lodge features 12 double en-suite rooms, each furnished to provide a restful retreat after long days on the water. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, with shared spaces that encourage guests to gather and trade stories of the day’s catches. Large windows frame views of the surrounding valley, bringing the stark beauty of Iceland indoors.
Amenities extend beyond the rooms, creating a welcoming environment for anglers and non-angling companions alike. A spacious dining area serves hearty meals prepared with local ingredients, while a sauna and hot tub provide the perfect way to unwind and recharge. With its combination of privacy, comfort, and communal spaces, the lodge ensures that guests enjoy both a sense of seclusion in nature and the camaraderie of fellow travelers.
Long Valley Lodge is located in northern Iceland, set along the Blanda River and its surrounding tributaries. The area is known for its wide valleys, clear glacial waters, and dramatic mountain backdrops that frame the fishing experience. Despite its remote feel, the lodge is positioned to offer relatively easy access to some of the country’s most productive salmon and trout waters, making it a practical yet wild base for anglers.
Travel to the lodge typically begins with an international flight into Keflavík International Airport, just outside Reykjavík. From there, guests can expect a ground transfer of about three and a half hours, heading north through Iceland’s scenic countryside. Transfers are usually arranged as part of the lodge package, removing logistical hurdles and ensuring smooth travel. The drive itself offers a first taste of Iceland’s stark beauty, with views of lava fields, highland plateaus, and glacial rivers along the route.
Day 1 – Arrival in Iceland
Arrive at Keflavík International Airport. Meet your driver or lodge representative and transfer north (approx. 3.5 hours) to Long Valley Lodge. Settle into your room, enjoy a welcome dinner, and receive an orientation on the lodge, fishing waters, and schedule for the week.
Day 2 – First Casts on the Blanda River
Begin your fishing adventure with a full day on the Blanda River. Focus on Atlantic salmon in productive pools near the lodge, guided by experienced staff. Evening return for sauna, hot tub, and lodge dinner.
