The lake itself is a large desert sink lake measuring approximately 20 by 15 km. It is located at approximately 3,000 ft. elevation in the wide open desolate expanse of the Patagonian Steppe. Here the rainbow trout average over 10 pounds with countless fish in the mid-teens as well as good numbers of fish into the 20 pound class. These fish are extremely stout and most are incredibly strong and acrobatic.
All of the fishing is done while wading or standing on the bank. Typically, a single guide will spend the day with a group of two or three anglers, depending on which beat is being fished. During a week’s visit, anglers will have the opportunity to fish different section of the Barrancoso River and any number of bays on Strobel Lake, including the inlet where the Barrancoso enters the lake. During the high water season, visiting anglers also gain access to beautiful Moro Creek and its surrounding lagoons. This small creek fishes great with dry flies.
The Jurassic season runs from September to May, during the season, anglers can expect to fish two different migrations, one in the early season from September to mid January and the second one from mid March to the end of the season

Frequently Asked Questions:
When is the best time to fish Jurassic Lake for trophy rainbow trout?
The prime season runs from November through March, during the Patagonian summer. Early season offers incredible action at the Barrancoso River mouth when huge schools of trout concentrate to feed, while midsummer brings stable weather and excellent sight-fishing opportunities in the lake’s bays and channels. Late season can also produce some of the biggest trout of the year as water levels drop and fish concentrate.
What size are the rainbow trout in Lago Strobel?
Jurassic Lake rainbows are famous for their size, averaging 8–12 pounds, with countless fish over 15 pounds and regular trophies above 20 pounds. Catch rates can be staggering, with dozens of hookups possible in a single day depending on conditions, making it one of the most prolific trophy trout fisheries on the planet.
What gear should I bring for a Jurassic Lake fly fishing trip?
Most anglers fish 7- or 8-weight rods with floating and sink-tip lines to handle heavy winds and large flies. A sturdy reel with a smooth drag is essential for these powerful trout. Wading gear (sturdy boots, breathable waders) is highly recommended for fishing the Barrancoso River and lake shoreline. Lodges also provide backup gear, but bringing your own trusted setup ensures you’re ready for anything.
How do I get to Jurassic Lake / Lago Strobel, and what does the travel involve?
Trips usually begin in Buenos Aires, with a domestic flight to El Calafate or Comodoro Rivadavia in Patagonia. From there, anglers take a combination of overland transfers (5–6 hours on rugged roads) to reach the remote lodge at Lago Strobel (Jurassic Lake). The travel is part of the adventure—delivering you to one of the most isolated and productive trout fisheries on earth. Private charter flights are also available and can be organized by our team.
