The Rio Azul, Bazaruto Archipelago, and Vilanculos region of Mozambique offer a diverse and rewarding range of fishing opportunities, making it a prime destination for serious anglers. In the Rio Azul area, the estuary system is rich with baitfish and tidal movement, creating ideal conditions for targeting a variety of species. The mangrove-lined channels and sandy drop-offs provide a productive setting for both lure and fly fishing. As the tide pushes in or out, predatory fish move with the current, ambushing prey in shallow sections and along structure. For anglers looking for a more physical challenge, the surf fishing along this remote stretch of coastline yields trophy fish, especially during the cooler months when bait congregates along the beaches.
Offshore, the waters between Bazaruto and Vilanculos are known for some of the best bluewater fishing in the Indian Ocean. The Bazaruto Archipelago, in particular, is world-renowned for its black marlin season from September to December, when large specimens are targeted using live bait and trolling techniques. Beyond marlin, these waters also produce sailfish, wahoo, dorado, and tuna species throughout much of the year. The underwater topography, including deep drop-offs, reefs, and pinnacles, supports a healthy population of pelagic and reef-associated species. Whether you’re casting in a mangrove channel, working poppers along the surf, or trolling offshore banks, this region offers a truly varied and action-packed fishing experience.
Rio Azul Lodge offers a blend of comfort and natural beauty, ideal for anglers and nature enthusiasts. The lodge features six beachfront chalets, each with twin beds and a pull-out bed for children under 16, providing direct views of the beach and estuary. For larger groups or families, there are two spacious beachfront villas, each accommodating up to six adults and six children. These villas include three double bedrooms, a loft with bunk beds, a private deck with a swimming pool, and ample lounge space, all overlooking the sea.
Guests have access to various amenities, including all meals, unlimited use of an estuary boat per room, sea kayaks, and snorkeling upon request. The main lodge area features a lounge, dining room, bar, and a wooden deck with a plunge pool, offering panoramic views of the estuary . Whether you’re casting a line in the estuary, exploring the mangroves, or simply relaxing by the pool, Rio Azul Lodge provides a serene retreat in Mozambique’s coastal wilderness
