The Nile below Murchison Falls is one of the most famous freshwater fisheries in the world, and Hemingway’s Camp sits right at its heart. Anglers come here for the chance to battle giant Nile perch, fish that routinely exceed 100 pounds and have the power to test even the strongest tackle. The prime fishing months are generally during the drier seasons, from December to March and June to October, when water levels stabilize and access to the riverbanks and hot spots is at its best. Most of the action takes place either from the banks near the base of the falls or from boats further downstream where the current eases.
Target species include the legendary Nile Perch, as well as hard-fighting tigerfish, several species of catfish, and the occasional yellowfish. Live bait is typically the most effective method for big perch, though casting lures can also produce excellent results. It’s an environment unlike any other: Murchison Falls crashes through a seven-meter-wide gorge, sending the Nile surging northwards and creating turbulent pools and deep channels where trophy fish lie in wait. Crocodiles, hippos, elephants, and birdlife share the river’s edge, making every cast as much a wilderness experience as a fishing one.
Fishing here is strictly catch-and-release, and trips are led by experienced local guides who know the river’s moods, ensuring both safety and the best shot at a trophy catch.
