Frequently Asked Questions:

Where is Murchison Falls National Park located?

Murchison Falls National Park is in northwestern Uganda, about 300 km from Kampala. It is the country’s largest and oldest national park, famous for the River Nile plunging through a narrow gorge to form the powerful Murchison Falls.

The best months for Nile perch fishing are during the dry seasons, from December to March and June to September. During these periods, water levels are lower and more stable, making access to fishing spots easier and increasing your chances of hooking a trophy fish.

While the main attraction is the Nile perch, which can grow over 200 kg, anglers may also encounter tigerfish, several species of catfish, and the occasional yellowfish. The diversity of species in the Nile makes every day on the water exciting.

The fastest option is a charter flight with Aerolink or Bar Aviation from Entebbe International Airport to one of the park’s airstrips (Pakuba, Bugungu, or Chobe), which takes around one hour. Alternatively, you can drive from Kampala or Entebbe in about 5–6 hours, with the added bonus of stopping at attractions like the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary along the way.

Murchison Falls National Park is home to more than 76 mammal species and over 450 bird species. On game drives and boat cruises, visitors can expect to see elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide range of birdlife, including the rare shoebill stork.

Most visitors require a visa to enter Uganda. The easiest option is to apply online for an Uganda e-Visa, which can be processed in just a few days. Single-entry tourist visas typically cost USD 50. It’s important to make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry.

Travelers to Uganda are required to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival. It is also strongly recommended to take malaria prophylaxis, and to carry insect repellent for protection against mosquito bites. Check with your doctor for additional recommended vaccinations such as typhoid, hepatitis A and B, and routine immunizations.
