The Everest of freshwater fishing.
Bucket List Goliath Tigerfish.
Why We Go ➜
- Target the legendary Goliath Tigerfish: One of the most powerful, aggressive, and difficult freshwater predators on earth. This is a focused expedition built around giving experienced anglers a genuine shot at a trophy fish.
- Fish the mighty Congo River: A vast, wild, and iconic river system where heavy current, structure, bait movement, and changing water levels create one of the most intense freshwater fishing environments in Africa.
- Stay at the best fishing base on the river: The trip combines serious expedition-style fishing with a comfortable riverside lodge, hosted logistics, dedicated boats, local river knowledge, and direct access to productive water.
- Experience a true African river adventure: This is not a casual lodge fishing trip. It is a remote, hard-earned, high-reward expedition where the setting, the fish, the river, and the uncertainty are all part of the appeal.

The Goliath Tigerfish, Hydrocynus goliath, is Africa’s apex freshwater predator and one of the most iconic game fish of the world. This large, fast, predatory species is primarily found in major Central African river systems, within the Congo River Basin, where it inhabits the Congo River and its tributaries, extending into Lake Tanganyika. Goliath tigerfish can grow to a length of 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) and weigh around 50 kg (110 lb), with exceptional specimens reaching up to 1.8 meters (6 ft) in length and over 70 kg (150 lb) in weight.
Other notable target species in the Congo basin include the widely distributed African tigerfish, Hydrocynus vittatus, the smaller but more well-known tigerfish found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, especially in systems such as the Zambezi and Okavango, as well as the odd nile perch.
On the main Congo River, goliath tigerfish fishing is shaped by the scale and force of the river. The water is often coloured, the current is strong, and the most productive areas are usually linked to current seams, eddies, rocky structure, drop-offs, and bait movement. Because visibility can be limited, fishing with live or dead bait under floats or drift baits through likely holding water is the most common approach, although lure fishing is becoming more popular. Heavy tackle, wire traces, strong hooks, and constant pressure are essential because of the tiger’s sharp teeth, hard bony mouths, explosive strikes, and a tendency to jump or throw hooks during the fight.
The Léfini tributary adds a different style of fishing to the Congo River experience. It offers a clearer-water contrast to the main river, creating better conditions for lure and fly presentations. In this environment, anglers can actively work spinners, spoons, bucktails, heavy flies, and other large predator presentations through pools, rapids, slack water, seams, and ambush points. The combination of bait fishing the vast main Congo and lure or fly fishing with lighter tackle in the clearer tributary water is what makes this stretch of river unique.
Ngabé Lodge is the riverside base for this Congo River goliath tigerfish expedition, located around a four to five hour drive from Brazzaville. Its position on the banks of the Congo River places anglers within reach of the key fishing areas, including the main river and the Léfini tributary. For anglers travelling to this part of the Congo, it is one of the most comfortable and well-positioned bases available, giving the trip the right balance of remote river access and comfort.
Anglers stay in wooden chalets with private verandas, en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, double beds, and hot and cold water. After long days targeting goliath tigerfish, anglers return to a proper lodge environment with full-board meals, bottled water, Wi-Fi, daily laundry, landscaped grounds, a restaurant, and swimming pools. This is the best base for a serious Congo River fishing expedition, offering the comfort needed to recover properly while staying close to one of Africa’s most iconic freshwater predator fisheries.
Brazzaville is the capital of the Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, a separate country from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The city sits on the north bank of the Congo River, directly opposite Kinshasa, and is the international entry point for this expedition.
How To Get There:
Anglers fly into Maya-Maya International Airport in Brazzaville (BZV). Flights typically connect through major hubs such as Paris with Air France, Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc, and regional African hubs such as Lomé, Abidjan, Libreville, and Pointe-Noire, depending on the routing and season.
From Brazzaville, anglers are met on arrival and transferred by road to Ngabé, the riverside lodge base for the expedition. The drive is typically around four to five hours, moving out of the capital and upriver into the Congo River corridor. This places anglers on the banks of the main river and within reach of the key fishing areas.
Day 1: Arrival in Brazzaville
Arrive at Maya-Maya International Airport in Brazzaville, where you will be met by the team. From here, anglers transfer by road to the riverside lodge at Ngabé on the banks of the Congo River. After check-in, the afternoon is used to settle in, prepare tackle, meet the guiding team, and run through the fishing plan, safety approach, river conditions, and the week ahead.
Days 2 to 7: Six Full Days Fishing the Congo River System
Each day is dedicated to targeting goliath tigerfish, with the fishing programme shaped by river conditions, water levels, weather, access, and fish movement. The expedition is fully hosted, with dedicated boats, local river guiding, and daily strategy decisions made around the best available opportunities. The focus is on serious predator fishing in a remote river environment, using heavy conventional tackle as the primary method, with fly fishing and spinning/lure fishing also available.
Fishing days are built around time on the water, adaptability, and persistence. Anglers target productive water across the Congo River system, where bait and predatory fish are likely to concentrate. After each day, anglers return to the lodge for meals, rest, and preparation for the following day’s fishing.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, guests depart the lodge and transfer back to Brazzaville for onward international flights. The team will coordinate the return logistics from the lodge to the airport.
*Gorilla Trekking Extension:
Anglers can also extend their journey with a gorilla trekking expedition in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, one of Central Africa’s most important rainforest wilderness areas. This add-on creates a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to combine goliath tigerfish on the Congo River with western lowland gorilla trekking in one of Africa’s wildest destinations.
Rates per angler:
Full week trip (7 Nights x 6 Days): US$4,900 per angler
Gorilla trekking expeditions in Odzala-Kokoua National Park can be added as a post-trip extension.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is the trip in the Republic of Congo or the Democratic Republic of Congo?
This expedition takes place in the Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, not the Democratic Republic of Congo. The trip starts in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, on the north bank of the Congo River.
What happens after arrival in Brazzaville?
On arrival in Brazzaville, anglers are collected and transferred by road to the lodge at Ngabé on the Congo River. The drive is typically around four to five hours, depending on road conditions and timing.
What health preparation is required?
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into the Republic of Congo. We also recommend malaria prevention medication. Anglers should speak to a travel clinic well before departure about yellow fever, malaria tablets, routine vaccines, hepatitis A, typhoid, insect-bite prevention, and any personal medical requirements.
What should I know about power, phones, and connectivity?
Congo-Brazzaville uses European-style Type C and Type E plugs, with a 230V supply and 50Hz frequency, so most modern phones, laptops, and camera chargers only need a plug adapter if they are dual-voltage.
Can I use cards, or should I bring cash?
Congo-Brazzaville uses the Central African CFA franc, but travellers should not rely on card payments outside major hotels or larger businesses in Brazzaville. Anglers should bring enough cash for personal expenses, gratuities, drinks, and incidentals, preferably in clean, recent US dollar or euro notes that can be exchanged locally if needed.
